Liquid Dietary Supplement.
Some Things You Should Know.

Generally speaking, a liquid dietary supplement is water, sugar, milk proteins, soy proteins (or a combination of both), oils, vitamins and minerals. Packaged normally in an 8 ounce size, is approximately 250 calories. “Plus” versions can reach the 355 calories mark.

Some you can find with fiber added, and most are lactose-free. There are specially made products created for children who have health problems and adults with diabetes, kidney disease and other health conditions.

What are some common liquid
dietary supplement brands ?

On the shelves at your local store or pharmacy, you will find products like Boost, Ensure, Resource, and many others. Years ago, these were used primarily in hospitals and nursing homes to help patients meet their dietary needs.

However, times have changed and now they are being marketed to all ages, no matter their state of health. Some are being advertised as a “meal replacement” option for busy professionals and hectic stay-at-home moms.

They are also being promoted to older adults as a way to stay healthy so they can enjoy their “Golden Years”.

Are the reasons stated for taking a
liquid dietary supplement valid ?

1. Weight Loss – Some are specifically targeted for those individuals wanting to lose weight. They recommend that you replace a meal or two a day with their 200+ calorie drink. This may be beneficial if you have a very hard time limiting food portions. However, in many cases a liquid dietary supplement is lacking in important substances, so never replace all meals with these products.

2.Just too busy to eat healthy – May be appropriate for occasional use when life just gets too busy to sit down and eat a decent meal. There are some substances that even a liquid dietary supplement is lacking in, though. Most of these products do not contain a source of fiber, although some manufacturers are now adding fiber to the mix. A liquid supplement is a good way to get a quick shot of vitamins, minerals and proteins.

3. Nutritional “Back-Up” – Some people are not eating a balanced diet. This is nothing new. Know that just because you are not eating a completely balanced diet, you will probably not develop any kind of deficiency disease. When you are concerned you are not getting enough of a particular vitamin or mineral, look for a food source to add to your daily intake. A liquid dietary supplement could help occasionally.

4. Poor appetite – Beware using a liquid supplement in times of poor appetite. They are very easy to get “bored” with, which could lead to an even lower interest in eating. Occasionally using a supplement may be beneficial in some instances, but if your interest in eating does not increase again quickly, seek medical help.

So, when looking at the large picture…there is nothing wrong with a liquid dietary supplement. When used in moderation, it can provide nutritional support to those individuals that need it.
